Feminicides in AREA

PRESENTATION
Feminicides in AREA project is a social activist research on feminicides that shows its contents in AREA, a new graphical, interactive and free visualisation tool.
Feminicides visualisations show violence against women that results in death in the Spanish State, from 2000 to nowadays, in a simple, easy to understand, and atractive but restless way.
This project seeks to collate current information on femicides in the Spanish State to facilitate social analysis and information spreading in order to promote social and political awareness of violence against women. At the same time it intends to encourage the use of opensource visualisation tools for social activist research purposes.
Feminicides information can be visualised under different parameters that permit univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis. These parameters have been defined as follows: type of violence, year of the murder, month of the murder, Victim’s Autonomous Community of Residence, Victim’s Age group, Victim’s relationship to the murderer and, finally, mortal weapon used.
Once pichtograms are visualised it is possible to know each case facts by clicking on each square. By doing so, more information appears on the screen.
Each visualisation includes aditional guiding information activated by cliking on the links and legends. Each visualisation can be saved for later visits and research.
This project started in 2006 in Barcelona. It has been developed by Núria Vergés and Jaume Nualart under Riereta’s framework and the economical support of the Catalan Government Women’s Intitute.
ON THE DATA:
Sources:
Feminicides in AREA contents come from data published in internet by recognised spanish women organisations[1]. Their information comes from feminicide news appeared in the media since police data in Spain is unstable, biased and scarce in information volume.
After a prudential period of 3 months to contrast the information any new case is included in AREA.
We are aware of the difficulty to find information that could show the real magnitude of violence against women. The reality seems that there is an undetermined number of murders that will be never reflected in public information.
Work on data:
Once the data has been contrasted it is included in our violences mysql database. This database, and its contents, are directly and immediatelly absorved to be visualised in AREA.
